What board should i go for?

Right heres the story, i surf mainly in summers but theres a new reef opening near me soon. I'm not an advanced surfer but can do the standing up, but havent yet got onto catching thr big green water waves. I have hired boards in the past, like the long foamies but i feel like i want to try shortboard. I havent got much money at the moment but i know someone selling a webber 6" shortboard for a price i can afford. I just need something to surf on. I love surfing but the whole of the internet says you should stick with longboards. Should i go for the shortboard which will save me money other than hiring a board everyday? Advice please
